Introducing MeshOS AirLink
MeshOS AirLink is a new feature of the MeshOS app that allows nearby phones to communicate using Bluetooth mesh technology while seamlessly bridging into the wider MeshCore network when longer range is needed.
For years, mesh networking has meant specialist hardware, tethered radios, and technical setup.
MeshOS AirLink changes that.
AirLink is a new way to experience the MeshCore network using ordinary phones.
Nearby devices can connect directly using Bluetooth mesh for text, voice, and data messaging, with no internet, mobile signal, WiFi, or tethered radio required.
Just install MeshOS on two phones and start communicating.
Need longer range? AirLink can bridge into the MeshCore network using just one MeshCore radio gateway per location.
Instead of every person carrying a radio, entire groups can communicate locally using their phones while gateways provide long-range connectivity between sites.
Why AirLink?
Traditional mesh networking works incredibly well, but for many people there has always been one problem:
Everyone needs a radio.
That means:
- ❌ Extra hardware
- ❌ Tethered devices
- ❌ More setup
- ❌ More cost
MeshOS AirLink removes that friction.
Now, nearby phones can communicate directly, while still connecting into the wider MeshCore network when longer-range communication is needed.
Simple nearby communication. Powerful long-range mesh when you need it.
Real-world use cases
🏠 Families & households
Your partner or family no longer need to carry around separate nodes.
One MeshOS gateway at home can bridge multiple phones into the wider MeshCore network.
Send messages home while out and about, even without internet.
🏕️ Hiking & outdoor groups
Two hiking groups can form separate local AirLink networks and stay connected over long distances through LoRa bridges.
Local when nearby. Long-range when separated.
✈️ Travel & transport
Planes, coaches, ferries and trains are perfect environments for AirLink.
Stay connected locally without expensive internet access or mobile signal.
🎪 Events & festivals
When mobile networks fail, AirLink keeps people connected.
Staff, organisers, volunteers and groups can communicate locally without infrastructure.
🏘️ Neighbourhood emergency communications
When the internet goes down, staying informed becomes difficult.
With MeshOS AirLink, nearby residents can communicate directly using their phones, even when mobile networks, broadband services or local infrastructure are unavailable.
During power cuts, severe weather events or network outages, neighbours can share updates, request assistance and coordinate locally without relying on external services.
Simply stand near a window, garden or front door and AirLink can connect nearby homes together, creating a resilient local communications network when it's needed most.
For wider coverage, neighbourhood gateways can bridge local AirLink communities into the wider MeshCore network.
🏗️ Remote sites & workplaces
Construction sites, farms, and remote workplaces often have no reliable mobile coverage.
AirLink keeps everyone on site in touch, while a MeshOS gateway provides a link back to the office or the wider MeshCore network.
🔗 Site-to-site connections
Connect multiple buildings or remote bases together through the MeshCore network, while staff at each location communicate locally over AirLink.
Ideal for warehouses, depots, off-grid properties and split sites.
Store-and-forward messaging
Messages don't always need to travel instantly to be useful.
MeshOS AirLink supports store-and-forward messaging, allowing communication to continue even when devices temporarily disconnect and reconnect later.
Reliable communication without depending on infrastructure.
Powered by MeshCore
AirLink is not a separate network.
It is part of the wider MeshCore ecosystem.
When longer-range communication is needed, AirLink can bridge into the MeshCore LoRa network using MeshOS gateways and repeaters.
The result?
Ordinary phones become part of something much bigger.
This is just the beginning
We believe resilient communications should be simple.
MeshOS AirLink is our next step toward making the power of MeshCore accessible to everyone.
MeshOS AirLink is on the way.
Stay tuned for launch.
